Couldn't wait to get to the end. I think Jill Mansell should give up writing for a while. The last 3 books have been pretty sub-standard.
What has happened to Jill Mansell? Her earlier works were fun, the plots were simple but believable, the dialogue witty and/or entertaining and the characters had some spark. There was an emotional payoff -- sort of like a lovely comforting cup of tea. The last few books have been pretty below par and I hate to say it, but this one is as well. The missed timing is interesting for a little while but it went on for so long that I almost gave up on the book altogether. And apart from being good looking, I just didn't see why these two characters liked each other -- there was absolutely no chemistry. The village atmosphere and village life which has been the hallmark of Mansell's books seems forced this time. And the dialogue is really pedestrian and just not worth it. And when I finally got to the "HEA" all I felt was relief that the book was over, no emotional satisfaction at all.I hate to say this but given that last 3 or 4 duds, I'm afraid this will be my last book by this author.If you are new to Jill Mansell, start with her early work -- its fun and worth the time. The newer ones feel tired and as if the author is just phoning it it.
I love Jill Mansell's novels, however, I have to agree with other reviewers that the last couple of books have been nowhere near as good as her earlier books. I love the character development, the intertwining story lines and the depiction of village or city life. This last book, however, had a mostly single-threaded story line, superficial character development of other characters and a contrived village. I had been looking forward to another great story to fill my vacation and feel very let down.
I love most books by Jill Mansell but not this one. It’s probably my least favorite. I did finish it but it was easy to put down after reading a chapter. No great urge to keep reading to see what would happen next. The characters were likable enough but story just seemed to go on and on with not much happening. Definitely not worth a second read.
I am going to have to give up on this author. This is the second novel I've tried to read by Mansell and I just cannot get into her writing style. I like the cover, its bright and cheerful, but the story line didn't capture my attention. A major pass on this one. Thanks to Netgalley for the early copy.
